About Kilduffs

What is ” Kilduff’s ” ?
” Kilduff’s ” was started in 2001/2002  to index a series of photographs and information of surviving Baltimore movie theatres that existed in Baltimore. The theatre index has since grown to include all movie theatres in Maryland built between 1900 and 1950. I have added several movie theatres built after 1950 which have since been replaced as well, or which I find somewhat interesting.

At the time when the site was started, there were several sites online regarding movie theatres in Baltimore, but over the years they have become harder and harder to find. Over the years, most of the other web sites have vanished, and some of the surviving web sites have actually used images found on Kilduffs and photographed by Kilduffs.

Several years ago, the server for Kilduffs.com was down for a few days. To keep this from happening again, the idea of mirror sites under the names Kilduffs.net and Kilduffs.org was created. All three sites are exact mirrors of each other and just in case one goes down, the other two are up and running.

By 2007, Kilduff’s added the Kilduff’s Baltimore section, and then Paul’s Puppets. Back in  2012, Kilduff’s Theatre pages were all redone, broken and dead links fixed and created and the whole web page under going a make over. New pictures will be put in where the old outdated pictures have gotten so small you can hardly see them. Check Kilduff’s out over the coming months, I think you’ll be impressed. In 2014, Kilduff’s Org was changed over to a forum for posting updates. We are also responsible for
PeterDPaul.Com.

John Kilduff was my grandfather, who passed away in 2000. For many years , he was a commercial artist for several big movie houses in downtown Baltimore, including the Century / Valencia,  Keith’s, and the Parkway. I suspect he also did work for the Hippodrome, Mayfair and New. After he passed away, copies of his work and original art work were found in his collection for the many old movies for which he worked on. He would also work on the theatre fronts, in which large signs and posters were displayed in front of the theatres, showing the public the next big show.

After working on the theatre index for many years, and with the assistance of my brother , Adam Paul, I began to notice other buildings of a forgotten Baltimore. In 2004, I began to collect old postcards, maps, advertisements  and photographs of  Baltimore, which showed a view of the City quite different from the City  today. While I’m not one to say the past was by any means better than today, I do believe that a place where someone can sit back and remember the Baltimore that was once was  is needed all the more. I pass by these buildings and locations all the time, and I have tried to document as many as possible on this web site. Ideas, suggestions, corrections and complaints are always welcome.

Fast forward to 2023. Life goes on and I still work on the websites. The old Kilduffs.Com site hasn’t been updated in a few years, but I would like to clean up some of the pages posted on day. However, for the most part, I think Kilduffs.com is complete. I’ve moved onto this new format, Kilduffs.net and WordPress, which makes the editing of the website so much easier. Enjoy !

We offer the most complete collection of the following topics found on the internet :

Old Maryland Motels – Our collection of Maryland Motel postcards is so large it won’t fit on one webpage.
Maryland Train Stations – Depots – We have found listings of many train stations and depot found in the State of Maryland that have long been forgotten. Surprisingly, many of these old buildings still survive.
Armory Buildings – We have found several of the old style Armory buildings around Maryland. A majority of those buildings are still standing today, used for different purposes.
Movie Theatres – What started as Kilduff’s Com, We have been moving much of our theatre material over to Kilduff’s.Net.

Kilduff’s will show you the old airports, travels along Rt 1 and Rt 40 through the State. If it’s old (and uninteresting to most ) , we probably have a reference to it.

2023 Update – Regarding images, if I took a picture ( all of the photographs of current status were taken by me) , please just email or at the very least, credit the website where the photo came from. I recently saw a new book that came out which had seven of my photographs on it. I never heard from the author, and the website got no credit at all , not even a mention.
