St. Michaels Train Station – Maryland

St. Michael’s Train Station
Talbot County – Maryland

The old train station in St. Michael’s,  Maryland 2024

There have been a few old train stations around recently that seemed to be ready for the wrecking ball, but were brought back from such a fate. First was the Glenarm Station in Baltimore County, which sat empty for years and has recently been converted into a coffee shop. Secondly, the B&O Station in Aberdeen has recently been restored after sitting vacant for years. It is so nice to see several of these old stations coming back to life.
Not to be outdone, the town of St. Michael’s on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. recently moved the old train station from the residential area it had been sitting on for years to the main street where it is undergoing conversion. Kilduff’s was curious about the status of the old station, and traveled over to take a look.

Undergoing the process of renovation – November, 2024

The old station about 5 years ago. It was being used as a home.

This is one of those stations that I have found only a little on. The station at last check was being renovated, and I believe the station was build around 1893, and was found along Railroad Avenue for years.
Oddly, I never found an article for the station’s grand opening, although I looked.

In 1900 , William Jennings Bryan stopped at the station along his unsuccessful campaign bid to be President of the United States, taking a train tour of the Eastern Shore, that began in Claiborne, and stopped in Hurlock and Vienna, ending up in Salisbury Maryland to a crowd of over 9,000 people.
In 1920- Citizens of St Michaels complained the Passenger waiting room of the station was being used for freight.

In 2019, there was talk of moving the station to a City Park. I’m not sure how that plan worked out, but I’ll check soon.
