Hagerstown – B&O – Washington County , Maryland

Baltimore & Ohio Railroad
Summit Avenue
Washington County, Maryland

The station was along Summit Avenue and torn down around 1947.

The B&O Station in Hagerstown Maryland was torn down years ago. Still looking for an exact year. I’m not even sure when the station opened, but the postcard above did have a postmark of 1913 Another old postcard had a postmark of 1916. My first clues.

B&O Station is on the right.

So, I dug and dug and ( well you get it ) and finally I found information on the end of the Hagerstown B&O Station. It appears it was torn down to make way for a gas station around 1947. In it’s place was built the wooden wall protection you see above. Twenty years later, the gas station was torn down for another building, I believe for the Town Newspaper this time.
In 1935, the B&O Station was in the newspaper for the display of a 55 foot, 63 ton Finback whale, that was fitted into a steel 85 foot Train car, which had glass enclosures for better viewing of the embalmed whale.
I read one article from the 1970’s about the public outcry when the old station was torn down. I Looked and looked and could not find anything in the paper about the demolishing of the old station.
