Between Corbett Station to the South & Blue Mount Shelter to the North
The Monkton Train depot has been built in miniature and has been featured in several train gardens over the years. I have heard Glen Arm Depot was also done in miniature as well.
The Monkton Train Station / Depot is one of several found in the State of Maryland that have been carefully renovated. The building appears to be in excellent condition.
In 1989 – there was a dedication of the trail from Monkton to the Penna. State Line.
This was in addition to the trail from Ashland to Monkton which opened in 1984.
In 1891 – over 1,000 gallons of milk were shipped out of the Monkton Depot along the Northern Central Railroad each day. Nearby White Hall and Sparks shipped lesser amounts.
1902- Arguments were heard about having a “Under grade” Crossing at Monkton ( tunnel ?)That proposal was defeated and no Under Grade was built.
1910 – A milk cow was struck and killed just south of the Monkton Station.
1916 – A man was struck and killed by a express train near Monkton Depot.
In 1917 – about one mile North of the station, a Pennsylvania Railroad train known as the ” Capitol Express ” derailed and several cars overturned. No serious injuries were reported.
In 1933 – a car was struck by a train near the station, killing the driver of the car.
In 1934, the Post Office in Monkton was broken into and the safe inside blown up. It is believed the thieves escaped using a vehicle parked on the train station parking lot and had used a passing train at the time to mask the sound if the explosion.
1936 – there was a search for a 18 month old child who was missing from the station at Monkton. The child’s body was found two days later in the Little Gunpowder River nearby.
1944 – A car stalled on the tracks and just about got struck by a oncoming train. The train was flagged down and everyone was ok.
