So I have an interesting story to share on how I managed to find the Rockawalkin Train Station. I was traveling to Ocean City on Rt 50 one day and saw a street sign for ” Rockawalkin” and remembered reading about the old train Station in Rockawalkin. I started to research and found that the old station was still standing and on a farm along Rockawalkin Road. The source of the information was dated however, and no matter how much I checked, I could not find the station.
Using Google Maps I managed to find a nearby building that looked like the station , but it was a little bit of distance from where it should have been . Further research found that the old station was moved to Mardela Springs by several people to save it and they restored it as well.
In 1891 The Station is listed on a schedule of stations in the area.
In 1892 – there was an article written that the name of the station should be “Rok-ia-wakin”, which according to the article was the 200 year old original name for the Wicomico River. The name was going to be changed that year according to the article, but I never saw the “new” version of the name used again after reading the article.
In 1896, the station also shows an active listing as a train station .
I believe the station was finally closed to rail traffic in 1931. I found an article that mentioned several of the Train Stations in the area closing.
The old Mardela Springs train depot, which had been on this site was still standing as of the late 1950’s. I found an article about the reusing of old train stations, and the Mardela Station at that time was being used as a barn. I’ve looked but have found no trace of the old station.
