Virginia Avenue, South Cumberland , Maryland
Construction is beginning of theatres listed on the Kilduffs.Com site to be brought over to Kilduff’s. net.
The 200 block of Virginia Avenue in South Cumberland had not one, or two old theatres, but three total over the years. They included the Lloyd, Leader and New. The Lloyd might actually still be standing, and appears to have been a movie house made out of a old Tobacco warehouse. Across the street, the old New Theatre stands, converted to meeting hall. I believe the Leader Theatre, located at 212 Virginia is the one theatre of the group of three in that block that has since been torn down. There is a old hall just north of the site of the Leader which is still standing, but I don’t think that movies were ever shown in there.
( The above narrative was added to the Kilduffs.Com webpage for the Lloyd Theatre over 12 years ago. We are currently updating the information……)
I believe the Lloyd was named after Thomas Lloyd of Cumberland who was mentioned in 1942 for a drive to help soldiers during the war. I have some older photos of the Lloyd taken years ago on my first trip out West. I found a few older ads for the theatre dated in the 1940’s.
