Hollins Station

Baltimore County, Maryland
Hollins Station was a very nice looking station along the Northern Central Railroad in Baltimore County , just North of the present City County Line, in the area of Lake Roland. The station opened in the 1870’s and was later rebuilt. From what I understand, the station later burned down. The station was located at the junctions of the Northern Central where it splits towards stations at Brightside and Ruxton and the Green Spring Branch that made it’s way to Ownings Mills. It also went by the name of Relay Station.
Way back in 1776, the Hollins area was used to make gunpowder for the war back then .
In 1887 – An article in the paper mentioned that there were six stations around Lake Roland.
In 1895 – a Man was struck and killed by a train at the station.
1896 – The roof of the station was torn off in a wind storm .
Also that year there was a train wreck that injured 6 men, on the tracks between Hollins and Brightside Station.
1897, the surface of Lake Roland was a sheet of ice, attracting ice skaters and adding the need of ” Skate at your own risk ” signs.
In 1902, several people were skating on that ice and fell through, resulting in the death of one person.
Apparently in 1905 a man fell off a train at Hollins and was killed.
In 1908, a well dressed man was struck and killed by a train at the Hollins Station.
In 1910, a man was held up by two masked men near Hollins Station. The victim drew his own weapon and the “robbers” fled.
1911 noted a train derailment which blocked the tracks for some while.
In 1920, an escapee from nearby Shepard Pratt Hospital was struck and killed by a passing train .
1922 noted another train derailment.
In 1926, Hollins Station was closed, although trains would still stop once in a while there or “Stray” customers awaiting a train.
By 1931, the station was vacant and deserted.
In 1934, the old Hollins Station was mentioned as another person drowned nearby.
1944, the area was proposed as a park. The site of the Hollins Station was where a “Modest Recreation Center ” would be built.
