Bridewell Train Station

Baltimore & Ohio Railroad – Anne Arundel County, Maryland

Bridewell seems to be a name for a well known prisons in both London and in Chicago. Articles about those two popped up a lot. But there was also a much smaller and less known station along the Baltimore & Ohio tracks in Anne Arundel County, near Jessup and the House of Corrections. I’m not sure if there was an actual depot building there or not, but I did find a few mentions of it.

It had the knickname of ” The Cut”, and was the train station of the House of Corrections in Jessup. I found several references to it under that name in 1910. A 1904 story found in the paper told of how a young girl , ten years old, was “mistreated” by a florist ( near the Notre Dame Station of the Ma & Pa ) railroad and sentenced to two years at the House of Correction, and the article mentioned Bridewell Station.

In 1915, a young officer from the Western District brought a rather large prisoner down on the train to Bridewell, and when the two arrived at Bridewell, the subject pushed the officer down and escaped. The officer had to take the train back to Baltimore to let his supervisor know of the escape.

I found notes of the old Station up until 1941. I’ll keep looking ……
