Here’s a list of Baltimore Area Television and Radio Stations that we remember from over the years. I’ll have these listed in ABC order with a few notes for each. Much of the information posted is from ” before my time ” but I’ll try to include everyone. Please if I forgot a few, let me know..
Much of the information about Baltimore Area stations was found in an Baltimore Sun article written by Thomas H. O Connor.( Side note, I had Mr. O Connor for a Broadcasting class back in the 1980’s at Towson State University. )
WAAM TV ( Now WJZ TV – Channel 13 )
WAYE Radio 860 AM
Sutton Place Apartment (Penthouse ) – 1111 Park Avenue
in 1976 Studio was listed as being in Essex
Played Progressive Rock for years, later moved to disco.
Of the few AM Rock music radio stations in Baltimore. For years, they had a bumper sticker that simply said ” One Waye ” with an arrow of a one way sign. I always thought that was a brilliant idea for a bumper sticker. ( I’m still looking for a image of one to post here <hint hint > ).
In 1979 I believe they changed format Big Band, and then later to Religious Radio.
WBAL Radio ( AM ) and TV
Radio station started in 1925
In 1947, WBAL moved to the “new Studio” at 2610 North Charles Street . Before that, they were located in Downtown Baltimore City.
WBJC – FM – The Radio station of the Community College of Baltimore.
BJC stands for “Baltimore Junior College “
Back in the early years at WBJC Radio
WBMD Radio 0750 AM
2 West Eager Street
I started seeing listings for WBMD radio in the late 1940’s. The listings continued through to the 1960’s. In 1969 , they were broadcasting a Gospel Tabernacle, which was also heard on WISZ in Baltimore as well. In 1970, the radio station was broadcasting live from “Florida Camping Lots” that measured 100 ft by 40 ft. I’m not sure exactly where the sale was or why it was on WBMD. In 1973, winner’s were announced on the station for free turkeys that were being given away at Plywood Outlet Stores. In 1974, a promotion campaign mentioned the station was playing Country music. The station popped up on several Camping shops ads from the 1970s. In 1976 , WBMD was broadcasting a World Mission ( Religious ) . In 1978, I believe they were playing Bluegrass music. By 1981, WBMD was broadcasting ” Miracle Services” that were going on at the Baltimore Civic Center. By 1988, the station was sold, listing the station as a daytime Radio Station with a religious format. I believe the sister FM station was WQSR FM, which was also sold.
WBSB – FM B-104 Radio
Back in the early 1980’s, the studio were located in Lexington Street , just East of Charles Street.
WCAO Radio
Opened in 1922.
The WCAO I remember was from the 1970’s and 1980’s, and played Rock & Pop. The station was located at the intersection of Parks Heights Avenue just South of the Beltway. The location was a Station building and the Radio Towers, but today the site is a housing development.
A picture postcard of the Upton Manor in West Baltimore, home back in the 1940’s of WCAO Radio.. A mansion years ago , the building was converted into a radio station ( WCAO ) around the 1930’s.
WAAM – TV – The Station name of WJZ ” Channel 13″ .
WCBM – Radio
Started i 1924
Early Studio – Charles at North in Hotel Chateau
Moved in the 1930’s to the Hearst Tower Building. In the 1970’s, found the address listed as 2610 North Charles Street ( Once WBAL studios )
In 1989 , the address used as Unit Block of Music Fair Road in Baltimore County.
An early matchbook cover for WCBM Radio. For as ong as I can remember, WCBM has been found on 680 AM . This Ad shows the station at 1400 AM. In the 1980’s, the station had the format of ” news talk “.
WEAA Radio – 88.9 FM
Morgan State University
From what I can tell, the station opened up back in 1977. ( Still looking for a bumper sticker to add to the page )
WEAR Radio
1922 era Baltimore Radio Station owned by Baltimore American newspaper.
WEBB Radio
Clifton and Denison Streets
named for Chick Webb
WFBR – Radio
WFBR Radio has been operating in Baltimore for many years. I remember stopping by the station and parking on 20th Street near Charles Street and walking up a long stairway to the Radio Station. I believe the Station was on the second floor of the old Centre Theatre, but don’t hold me to that. In the 1970’s, ” Johnny Walker” was the talent at the station which was mentioned all the time. WFBR also broadcast several sporting teams over the years.
WGBH Radio – 1920’s Radio Station
WITH Radio
WJZ – TV ( see WAAM TV above)
WKC Radio
Baltimore’s first radio station in 1922. Broadcast from Madison Avenue .
WLIF – Radio
WLIF played the ” Beautiful Music ” that music that could be heard on Muzak, and was kind of a back ground music popular in the day ( AKA Elevator music ) . In earlier days, was known as WAQE FM. ( Sister AM station was WTOW, which opened in 1955.
WLPL – Radio
Had been WSID FM – Used the name WYOU in the early 1960’s.
Studios for WLPL were located in the 1970’s on Reisterstown Road in a small business building across the street from the Reisterstown Road Plaza. In the 1990s, I think they were later moved to the Belvedere Shopping Center at York Road and Belvedere Avenue.
WMAR – TV & Radio
WMAR TV was Baltimore’s First Television station back in 1947. The station moved a few years later to ” Television Plaza” on York Road just North of the City County Line. I remember WMAR Radio back in the 1970s when it was playing ” Beautiful Music” .
.
WPOC Radio – 93 FM
1978 found yet another Baltimore Area Radio Statin with the WPOC Traffic Helicopter flying overhead.

The studios of WWIN were located in the 2800 block of Matthews Street, at the rear of a Shopping Center at Greenmount Avenue and 29th Street. The shopping center is still there.
