Ford, Auburn, Cord, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Plymouth, Rambler
Over the years, the family name “Bittorf” comes up alot for Baltimore Area Car Dealerships. The first reference I found is in 1931, and a small dealership called ” Bittorf & Anderson” located at 807-17 East Fayette Street. According to the ad I found, they sold Auburns and Cords.
In 1934, the Bittorf name was used for a Auburn Dealership on the corner of North Charles Street and Mt Royal Avenue. One ad showed the Auburn Challenge, where they drove a Auburn to Atlantic City New Jersey and how the vehicle handled the trip.
In 1935, the address 1001 North Cathedral Street ( at the intersection of Eager Street ) began to be used as the home location of Bittorf Auburn-Cord. Pontiacs were also sold at that location. By 1940, Bittorf Ford was showing the stock of vehicles it had for sale, from the new dealership located in the beginning at 4213 Reisterstown Road. In 1955, Bittorf Oldsmobile could be found at 4709 Belair Road, which by the 1950’s showed a new address of 5665 Belair Road, still selling Oldsmobiles.
In the 1950’s Bittorf Oldsmobiles also sold Ramblers for a while. The 1950’s also saw Bittorf selling Hudson’s and Kaiser-Frazier’s.
In the early 1960’s , Bittorf Ford showed several Addresses including 1001 Cathedral Street, 1370 West North Avenue ( the old Brooks-Price Buick building ) and noted by Bittorf as the “Service and Parts Location” and 1100 East 25th Street, for what appeared to be a Used car lot. One ad actually mentioned an address for Bittorf Ford in 1961 at Howard and North Avenue. 1960 also saw the opening of Bittorf Plymouth in the 7400 Block of Harford Road, which is now used by Amoco Transmissions.
In 1972, Bittorf Ford used the address of 5720 Reisterstown Road, which I believe was later used by Archway Ford, and is currently used by Eastern Motors. 1975 is the end of references to Bittorf Motors that I could find. It is very possible the dealership was still operating, but 1975 was the last year I could find print ads for them.
