Ashley Chevrolet

2001 North Broadway +

Ashley Chevrolet started, according to my research opening at the intersection of St. Paul Street at Centre Street in the old Maryland Motors showroom, in 1928. An article from that year mentioned the showroom was temporary as new showrooms were being built on Fallsway and Centre Street.

In 1934, the address for Ashley Chevrolet was listed as “Corner of Fallsway and Lexington Street”. By 1936, Ashley was showing two different addresses including 300 – 306 Fallsway, and 1305 Cathedral Street. My guess is that Cathedral address is present day 900 Cathedral Street, as there is no 1300 block of Cathedral Street, but I’ll keep digging.

By 1938, Ashley Chevrolet used the address of 116 West Read Street. 116 West Read Street had been the home of Lambert Auto Co, known back in the 1930’s as “The House of Confidence”. I’m not sure what became of the old Maryland Motors showroom on St Paul Street, or the Fallsway address Ashley used for years.

Ashley Chevrolet used the 116 West Read Street address up until 1950, when the new showroom at 2001 North Broadway was opened. This location was directly accross the street fom the parking lot of the Sears Store on the Northeast Corner of North Avenue and Harford Rd. This strip of Broadway was commonly known as “Broadway Extended” and turned over to Harford Road just north of North Avenue. Ashley Chevrolet would often list in the ads for the dealer that the name was “A-S-H-L-E-Y”, which even on smaller, simple ads would get your attention.

Ashley Chevrolet continued to operate from this location until the dealership closed down in 1971, partly due to the fact of the passing of the owner.
